One person was injured when police opened fire at a person who allegedly attempted to attack officers with a sharp weapon in Uragasmanhandiya last evening (23).
Officers from the Uragasmanhandiya Police had gone to the Kaluwalagoda area on information that a wanted suspect was in the area. Police found the suspect who was with two other people. One of them had allegedly attempted to attack officers with a sharp weapon, whereupon one of the officers had fired at the person's leg.
All three persons, including the wanted suspect and the person who was shot in the leg had both escaped during the confrontation. Police though, had subsequently located and arrested the injured person and admitted him to the Elpitiya Hospital.
The injured person is a 26-year-old from Uragasmanhandiya. He was due to be produced in court today.
