The adverse weather that has been experienced over the island during the past few days continues to worsen.
In an emergency warning issued at 2.00pm today (9) and valid till 2.00pm tomorrow (10), the Department of Meteorology states that a low-pressure area has formed in the south-east Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify further in to a depression during the next 36 hours and move West-Northwestwards towards North Tamil Nadu, closer to the North coast of Sri Lanka.
There can be very heavy showers or thundershowers, strong winds up to (60-70)kmph associated with rough seas over the aforementioned sea area and the sea areas around the Island.
Very heavy showers above 150mm are likely in Northern, North-western, Western & Sabaragamuwa provinces & Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Nuwara-Eliya & Kandy districts. Heavy showers about 100 mm can be expected in Matale, Polonnaruwa, Galle & Matara districts.
Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture to the South-west Bay of Bengal sea area and deep and shallow sea areas around the Island until further notice.
Those who are in aforementioned sea regions are advised to return to coasts or move to safer areas as soon as possible.
Fishing and naval community are requested to be attentive regarding future forecasts issued in this regard.
