News

Two special police teams have been appointed to investigate today’s assault incident at the boys’ hostel of the Ragama Medical Faculty.

Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekare said the Inspector General of Police has been instructed to ensure that legal action is taken against those who were involved in the assault and for mis-using state vehicles.
The police investigation teams will come under Senior Deputy Inspector General- Western province.

A suspect, a driver of a vehicle that came to the hostel premises too has been arrested and presently being questioned at the Ragama police station.

Four students have been hospitalised after a group entered the hospital premises and assaulted them. Three students are treated at the Ragama Teaching Hospital while another who was assaulted is at the Negombo Base Hospital.

“A few days ago two student groups clashed over a game, but the issue was sorted. This was a sudden attack, and involved outsiders. They arrived with baseball bats and all kinds of poles and came in several vehicles,” said a union spokesperson.

“The vehicle that was surrounded by students belonged to the Coconut Development Authority while a wallet fallen within the premises had a work ID of a personal assistant to Minister Arundika Fernando,” he said.
