About 2000 minor employees in the state sector will be selected to fill the huge shortage of railway workers, a senior official of Sri Lanka Railways said.
He said the shortage arose following this year’s implementation of the 60 year compulsory retirement for state sector employees.
"During the previous regime, the government recruited a large number of youth who did not pass the Ordinary Level examination. Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena will coordinate with state institution heads on releasing these employees. They will be trained and recruited as railway workers,” he said.
Meanwhile about 50 engine drivers who were retired this year will be placed again on contract basis until the suitable candidates are trained.
