Minor staff at the National Eye Hospital in Colombo launched a strike from 7.00am this morning (31) in protest at the transfer of a trade union leader from the hospital.
The strike has severely disrupted activities of the hospital.
The strikers claim that the staff member was transferred owing to his trade union activities and are demanding that the transfer be halted.
Five health sector trade unions are involved in the strike, a spokesman for them stated. He added that trade union representatives have now arrived at the Health Ministry premises and were awaiting a meeting with Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena regarding the matter.
Unions say they plan on continuing the strike action until their demand is granted.
