As of June 2024, there were more than 1.1 million cases pending in all courts across the country, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today.
He said these cases are pending before the Supreme Court to the Magistrates Courts.
“This is not the fault of anyone but these are cases that have built up over the years. There are long court delays which have led to this situation,” the Minister said while speaking on the votes of the Ministry of Justice in Parliament today.
He said that the Attorney General’s Department is heavily understaffed. “The cadre is for 459 state counsels for the Department but today there are only around 209 officers ,” he said.
He said the Government plans to digitalise the court system and expedite the disposal of cases as well as enable fresh recruitments to ensure that the judicial sector has adequate personnel.
