Three people were killed and eight others injured in a collision involving three vehicles at Panichchankulam in Mankulam along the A9 Road in the early hours of this morning (15).
Police Media Unit said a van traveling from Colombo towards Jaffna had crashed into a parked lorry, which in turn then collided with another lorry.
The driver of the rearmost lorry, who had been standing between the two lorries, was trapped between the two lorries following the crash and sustained critical injuries. Another person who was in the same lorry and the passenger in the front seat of the van also suffered critical injuries in the accident. They were rushed to the Mankulam Hospital but all three succumbed to their injuries.
Three female passengers in the van and two males who were in one lorry were admitted to the Kilinochchi Hospital while three males who were in the other lorry were admitted to the Mankulam Hospital.
The deceased are aged 38, 46 and 58 years of age. They are residents of Mulleriyawa New Town, Wellampitiya and Jaffna.
The driver of the van has been arrested and Mankulam Police are conducting further investigations.
