The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has ordered the withholding of three batches of injections manufactured in India.
The NMRA order has been issued to a Sri Lanka representative company of the Indian manufacturer.
A senior NMRA official said the three batches were withdrawn following incidents of adverse reactions on patients at Peradeniya Teaching Hospital recently.
One maternal death was reported from the hospital on Thursday, but there was no confirmation that the injection had caused the death.
The NMRA letter orders the company to withhold the three batches of the injection from use immediately, give consignment details of the batch and explain the background of the manufacturer within 28 days.
Government Medical Officers Association Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said the injection was used in Cesarean operations and the batches in concern had caused “adverse reactions” in patients.
“It is a good decision. Even in the case of a shortage, the public should not be given dangerous medicine,” he said.
