Customs officials on Friday (03) seized a consignment of narcotics worth Rs. 73 million sent by air mail to the Colombo Central Mail Exchange.
Thirteen parcels were sent by air mail from the United Kingdom (UK), Germany, Canada, the United States of America (USA), Belgium and Netherlands. The initial documents given to the postal officials regarding the above parcels stated that they contained personal items.
However, during the inspection a lot of narcotics were found in those parcels which were carefully packed, Customs Media Spokesman, Deputy Director Sudattha Silva said.
Among those drugs are 921 grams of Kush drug, 106 grams of Ice drug, one liter of Organic Hemp Oil (4 bottles of 250ml), 5272 pills of Methamphetamine, 425 shares of Stamp drug, 2 grams of Mandy, 4 grams of Hashish were recovered during the inspection.
After carrying out the preliminary investigations, the case productions were handed over to the officers of the Narcotics Bureau of Sri Lanka Police for further investigation.
Earlier last week, the Custom Officials also detected another consignment of narcotics worth Rs. 49.56 million sent by air mail to the Colombo Central Mail Exchange.
The parcel consisted of a cardboard box and was sent to a resident of Angoda, Colombo. The documents submitted in this regard also stated that it contained personal items.
"Despite increased surveillance at the airport and other entry points, the import of illegal drugs has increased slightly," Mr. Silva said.
The customs had two detections last week, and in the previous ten months, the customs had more than fifteen to twenty detections of illegal drugs, he said.
