A special raid conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in the seas off Madagal, Jaffna has recovered a cannabis haul worth 82 million rupees with two suspects along with a dinghy yesterday (Dec 06).
Reportedly, the SLN craft deployed by Northern Naval Command has recovered seven sacks of Kerala cannabis weighing 275 kilos (with wet weight) from the sea.
Navy said that 110 cannabis bundles were found while searching the sacks recovered from the sea. The two suspects and a dinghy were nabbed while they were speeding away to evade arrest.
The SLN suspects that the smugglers might have dumped the smuggled cannabis haul into the sea after spotting the Navy’s presence and seeing their inability to transfer them ashore.
The SLN sources also revealed that the street value of the smuggled cannabis haul is believed to be approx. Rs. 82 million.
The entire operation was conducted conforming to healthcare guidelines, the SLN confirmed and further said that the suspects reportedly residents of Madagal, aged between 25 and 37 were handed over to the Ilavalai Police Station for onward legal proceedings together with the cannabis haul and the dinghy.
