The Monday's level crossing crash in the Maiyawa area of Arachchikattuwa, involving a mother and her two children, shows that the railway authorities were solely accountable.
The Maiyawa railway crossing has been without a railway gate guard for a few weeks, and the railway authorities were notified prior to the former guard’s discontinuation of service.
However, locals claim that the railway authorities have not shown any concern regarding this location, which is prone to numerous accidents, and they had not made plans to send a guard to the railway crossing prior to this incident.
The bodies of the mother, son and daughter who died in the accident were brought to the Mundala railway station in the same train that was involved in the accident and were taken to the District General Hospital in Chilaw in another vehicle.
Further investigations into the incident are currently being carried out by the Arachchikattuwa Police.
