Sri Lanka will ban the domestic manufacture and sale of single-use plastics from October 01, 2023, the Central Environment Authority (CEA) announced.
Thus, the items to be banned include, single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cups, plates, knives, forks, spoons, string hopper trays and garlands made of plastic and polythene.
The Government earlier this year announced the ban on the import, production, sale and local use of seven single-use plastic and polythene products with effective from June 01, 2023 following a proposal submitted by the Minister of Environment in the wake of recommendations of a committee of experts with a view to the adverse impacts of plastic waste on the environment and local wildlife which was taken into consideration on August 30, 2023.
