Newly-appointed Finance Minister Ali Sabry resigned from his post today with immediate effect, his office said.
Minister Sabry who held the Ministerial post of Justice ahead of the Cabinet reshuffle yesterday was appointed Minister of Finance yesterday by the President as an interim measure until the current crisis is resolved with the appointment of a new Cabinet.
In his resignation letter, Minister Sabry also expressed his willingness to resign from his National List post to allow a fresh appointment to the Parliament.
"..after much reflection and deliberation, and taking into consideration the current situation I am now of the view, for your Excellency to make suitable interim arrangement to navigate this unprecedented crisis, fresh and proactive and unconventional steps needs to be taken, including the appointment of a new Finance Minister,"

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
