The night mail train heading from Colombo to Badulla collided with a boulder that had toppled onto the track between Diyathalawa - Haputale, but a major accident was averted, railway officials said.
Clearing operations of the track were underway.
As the train operates with two engines the passenger wagons were moved away.
Railway services to the upcountry has been disrupted until further notice.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today that unilateral action by the UK and other countries in imposing sanctions on certain individuals do not assist but serve to complicate the national reconciliation process underway in Sri Lanka.
