The oldest elephant at the National Zoological Gardens at Dehiwala has died today at the age of 79.
The Director of the National Zoological gardens, Thilak Premakantha said that the elephant showed change of behavior yesterday and refused to get into the bathing pond.
He said that afterwards the elephant lay down and peacefully passed away during early hours around 2.30 am.
Mr Premakantha recalled that the elephant which was found from Anuradahapura when it was around 3 years age had been at the zoo ever since.
