The government has decided to allow an opposition MP to be appointed as chair of the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA), Leader of the House and Minister Bimal Rathnayake informed Parliament today.
Mr Rathnayake added that the government has also increased the composition of COPA to allow more MPs from the opposition to serve in the committee.
The composition of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) too will be increased, though a government MP will serve as COPE chair. Minister Rathnayake said. He said the government needed one of its MPs to chair COPE as the committee will initially inquire into matters relating to the previous government and it would be unethical for someone who would have been a minister in that government to chair COPE in such a situation.
