Over 8000 members to be elected to local authorities

Over 17 million voters will be eligible to cast their ballots to elect representatives to 339 local bodies at the 2025 local government election on Tuesday (6). 

The cooling period for the local government election will commence at midnight today (3). Accordingly, no political campaigning will be allowed during the last 48-hour period before the election. 

Tuesday’s election will be held in all local authorities except for the Kalmunai Urban Council and the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha. Accordingly, voters will be electing members to 28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils and 275 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

The number of voters eligible to cast their ballots at the upcoming election is 17, 156, 338. The Election Commission stated that 648, 494 are eligible for postal voting. 

A total of 75, 589 candidates from 49 political parties and 257 independent groups will be contesting the election on May 6. The poll will see the 8287 members elected to local authorities. 

Polls will open at 7.00am and close at 4.00pm. Voting will take place at 13, 759 polling centres across the island covering 4877 wards. Ballots will be counted at 5783 counting centres.
