Public Health Inspectors have launched an operation across the country to detect all sweets including chocolates that have been smuggled into Sri Lanka from foreign countries and displayed for sale.
Mr. Upul Rohana, President of the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Association said due to the economic situation in our country, restrictions have been imposed on the importation of certain goods including chocolates and sweets have been placed.
He said restrictions have been imposed on the sale of food items imported from foreign countries.
He said according to the Food Act it has also been
very clearly indicated before displaying any food item imported from a foreign country to the country for sale the packing should include information about the contents, the manufacturing institution, date of manufacture and expiry day. It should be indicated in two languages used in our country.
He said most of the chocolates and sweets available in the market do not have such a note.
