Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya visited the Trilingual National School, which is under construction in Kaduruwela, Polonnaruwa, to assess the progress of the project on February 14, 2025.
The school is being developed with assistance from the Government of India and aims to provide education to children from all ethnic and religious backgrounds in the region.
During the inspection, the Prime Minister was briefed on delays in construction, which has been progressing at a slow pace for several years.
According to the construction company, the front building, funded by the Indian Government, is 75% complete, with the remaining work requiring approximately Rs. 150 million and the second building, financed by the Sri Lankan Government, is 40% complete, with Rs. 400 million needed to finish the project.
Engineers informed the Prime Minister that once completed, the school will accommodate 1,600 students and include special education units, language classrooms, e-learning facilities, hostels, an administrative building, laboratories, sanitary facilities, and teachers' quarters.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya directed authorities to expedite the necessary proposals and plans to ensure the school’s facilities are effectively utilized for the benefit of students without further delays.
The visit was attended by Deputy Minister of Housing T.B. Sarath, Polonnaruwa District Parliamentarians Padmasiri Bandara and Sunil Rathnasiri, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education Nalaka Kaluwewa, Governor of the North Central Province Wasantha Jinadasa, Polonnaruwa District Secretary Sujantha Ekanayake, and other officials.
