The Public Utilities Commission will not approve any scheduled power cuts until February 17 in order to protect the rights of over 331,000 students sitting for the G.C.E.Advanced Level examination, Chairman of the Commission Janaka Ratnayake said.
“Any such power cuts during this period will be considered as unauthorized and illegal,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board announced that it will go ahead with the two and half hour usual power cuts.
A senior official said the board has decided to continue the demand management programme and that the CEB has informed the decision to the PUCSL.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
