Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) expects to deliver pertinent proposals about the revision of electricity tariffs to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) in the next two days.
Addressing Parliament this morning (20), Minister Wijesekera declared that the Ministry expects a large drop in electricity rates.
The Minister also said that the maintenance initiatives that have been started during the last four years and are scheduled to be completed this year. He said they included them in the CEB’s budgeted expenses for the present year.
He said it was proposed by the Ministry that the CEB allocate these costs in an equal manner for the next three years.
In the meantime, given the recent spike in demand and the present dry weather conditions, the CEB has advised consumers to utilize electricity responsibly.
According to the CEB’s Spokesman and Deputy General Manager Noel Priyantha, 46 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power have been used so far in February.
He further pointed out that hydropower generation has been limited to a maximum capacity of 20% due to the current arid weather conditions.
