A plan to build a walking path on the bank of the Kantale tank has been suspended on a directive of the Irrigation Department.
The move came after protests from farmers in the area who said that the construction would be dangerous to the tank.
A meeting was held on Sunday in the area to seek view of the farmers and other organisations.
SLPP politicians in the area strongly defended the project, but farmers pointed out the dangers of the construction.
It was only last week the Irrigation department decided to abandon a plan to construct a similar path on the banks of the Parakrama Samudraya.
However, already damages have been caused to part of the tank bund.
Villages have pointed out that already the area has a walking path and there was no necessity for the construction of such a path.
