A police constable is among seven suspects taken into custody in connection with an alleged attempt to search for buried LTTE gold in Kilinochchi.
The suspects were taken into custody at the Ramanathapuram road block in Kilinochchi yesterday while traveling in two cars. Based on a tip-off given by police intelligence, officers stopped the two vehicles at the road block and searched the two vehicles. Police also found a high powered scanner in one of the vehicles that police believe the suspects were trying to use to search for gold.
Aside from the scanner, police also found several other tools inside the vehicles that police believe they were trying to use to search for buried gold.
Aside from the police constable who is reported to be attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the other suspects have been identified as residents of Galle and Matara. They are due to be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate's Court. Kilinochchi police are investigating.
