A Police Constable attached to the Polgahawela Police station was killed last night after he was knocked down by a tipper vehicle transporting sand near Puhuriya Junction in Polgahawela last night (9).
The 45-year-old Constable was part of a three-person police team from the Polgahawela Police station on a mobile patrol. They had stopped their vehicle on the side of the road near the junction and were conducting a search of vehicles and drivers on the road when the incident occurred.
According to Police, the sand-filled tipper vehicle, which was on its way from Kantale to Kaduwela, had knocked down the Constable on the side of the road and smashed into the double cab that the policemen had been traveling in.
The victim was rushed to the Polgahawela Hospital and then transferred to the Kurunegala Hospital for further treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased Constable is a resident of Girabe, Polgahawela. The tipper driver responsible for the accident has been arrested. Polgahawela Police are investigating.
