A 42-year-old police sergeant was killed in a tragic road accident in Marawila yesterday morning (May 12).
The incident occurred along the main road in the Marawila Police Division, where two officers were conducting a roadside inspection of a three-wheeler. During the inspection, a car swerved off the road, striking both officers and the three-wheeler driver before crashing into an electric pole approximately 20 metres away.
The deceased officer, identified as a sergeant attached to the Kuliyapitiya Police Division and a resident of Horathapola, Marawila, succumbed to his injuries.
The car was driven by a 22-year-old woman whose mother and grandmother, also in the vehicle at the time, sustained minor injuries.
The driver has been taken into police custody, while the body of the diseased officer was released to his family following a post-mortem examination.
The Marawila Police are conducting further investigation into the incident.
