Police and Catholic priest averted villagers burning down a bus in Arachchikattuwa, Puttalam after an accident which claimed the life of a 27-year-old motorcycle rider.
The motorcycle was badly damaged and the rider who was seriously injured succumbed to his injuries after he collided with a bus heading to Vavuniya.
The villagers also attacked persons representing the owners of the bus who arrived at the scene.
More than 100 policemen back by the STF were trying to avert the burning down of the bus stating it could affect a major power transformer located close by. But despite the warning some villagers tried to burn the bus down.
However, residents from a nearby fishing village continued with the protest, blocking traffic on the main road.
Later, Catholic priest in the area had spoken to the villagers and managed to bring the situation under control.
