Police made a fresh appeal for motorist to be cautious in driving during the New Year season.
Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said that with the dawn of the New Year many were expected to travel to visit their relatives and to the outstations and that people should be careful in driving on the expressway and other roads.
He said it has been witnessed that people had stopped their vehicles on the expressway in unauthorized locations and warned that legal action would be taken against such persons.
He said people should also be careful in overtaking on the expressway and additional policemen have been deployed to ensure that people follow traffic laws.
SSP Thalduwa said that in 2020 April there were 99 fatal accidents claimed 103 lives, in 2021 April there 233 fatal accidents claiming the lives of 243 persons while last year 261 fatal accidents were reported in April and 276 people were killed.
