Kirulapona Police have launched an investigation to arrest suspects who allegedly extorted Rs. 1.5 million from former Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake.
According to a complaint made by Mr Ratnayake, he had received a call on his mobile phone yesterday from a man claiming to be alleged underworld leader "Bloemendhal Sanka." The person had told the complainant that he had been given a contract amounting to Rs. 8 million to kill him. He had demanded Rs. 1.5 million from the former PUCSL Chairman not to go through with the contract.
Mr Ratnayake had stated in his complaint that acting on instructions given over the phone, he had sent Rs. 1.5 million with one of his staff members to a location near a private bank branch in Kirulapana. The staff member had told police in his statement that the money was picked up by two persons in a blue coloured Alto Car.
The suspects remain unidentified and investigations are ongoing to arrest them.
