A ceremony was held today (9) under the patronage of the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles in appreciation of the police officers who contributed to the rescue of two children taken hostage and preventing any injuries or fatalities from occurring.
Accordingly, DIG M.K.B.S.N. Gunarathne, V.G.D.S. Samaranayake and nine other police officers were awarded tokens of appreciation under the Police Reward Fund for their contributive efforts throughout the operation.
The two children who were taken hostage by a father over a family dispute on Monday (6) in Jalthara, Hanwella were rescued by the Police Special Task Force after a nine-hour operation.
The suspect had come with a hand grenade to murder his wife who was living at the Government Employees Housing Complex in Jalthara on Monday evening and taken the children hostage.
