Matara Divisional Crime investigation unit has been entrusted with the investigation into the shooting incident which occurred at the residence of Weligama NPP Pradeshiya Sabha member Thraka Nanayakkara, in the early hours of today.
An unidentified gunman had opened fire at the residence located at Thelijjawila.
This incident had happened despite two police officers having been assigned to provide security to the Pradeshiya Sabha member, Mr Nananayakkara after he received death threats from a SJB member of the same Pradeshiya Sabha. A case is pending on the matter.
The gunmen accompanied by another person had arrived 4.30 am today, near the residence of Mr Nannayakkara at Thelijjawila on a motorbike, The gunman had repeatedly shot the house. When the incident occurred the area's electricity connection too was disrupted.
The gunman had shot seven times to the residence of the Pradesiya sabaha member by use of a T 56 firearm. The police officers assigned to provide security to Mr Nannayakkara said that they too returned fire until the two men fled the area.
However the gunman had escaped.
Mr Nanayakkara said that he heard repeated gunshot sounds early morning time, and when quarried from the police officers they had told him that that a gunman shot at the house, and they carried out a counter-attack.
Meanwhile SJB politician, Tharaka Nanayakkara also from Galle had received several messages and calls inquiring whether the attack was on his house.
In a Facebook post, he thanked those who called and made inquiries.
‘Although that attack is not on me, the government should investigate it immediately,’ he said.
