Police have taken steps to provide protection for senior journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama, whose residence was attacked by an unidentified group recently.
Police Media Unit said, in response to a request made to court by Mr Samarawickrama to be provided police protection, the Piliyandala Magistrate had ordered the Director of the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses to act in accordance with the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act.
After the court order was sent to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security has sought guidence and advice from the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crimes and Witnesses.
Until such guidence and advice is received, the IGP has directed the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province to provide appropriate security to journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama
