Kalpitiya Police have launched a search operation to arrest the main suspect who is involved in transporting 630 kilograms of illegally smuggled Tendu Leaves (used to wrap Beedi -mini cigars) from India following a chase, police said.
Police officers intercepted the vehicle which transported the smuggled leaves following a tip-off given by military intelligence at the Thalawila police post. The consignment was seized by the police along with the van used for smuggling.
According to the police, the suspect had abandoned the vehicle and ran away during the police chase. Steps are underway to apprehend the suspect identified as a 24-year-old man from Nagavillu area.
