Special Traffic Police teams are to be deployed in a bid to minimise a spate of deadly road accidents that have been reported since the lifting of travel restrictions this week.
Police Spokesman Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Ajith Rohana said 10 people have been killed in fatal road accidents within the past 24 hours alone.
Five of the victims were pedestrians while four were motorbike riders or pillion riders, he revealed.
Drunk driving, as well as reckless and negligent driving have been the main causes of such fatal accidents, the SDIG said. As such, special traffic police teams are to be deployed in a bid to control the situation.
He appealed to the public to obey traffic rules, road signs and ensure road safety at all times to prevent road accidents.
