Police warn of ‘Valentine’s Day’ gift racket

News

Police have appealed to youth to be watchful of a racket where persons collect money on the pretext of offering a gift to mark the “Valentine's Day”.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said that people were receiving messages in the form of emails, sms messages or on social media claiming that the recipient of the message was a winner of a gift.

“In order to receive the gift at home the recipient was required to make a deposit for delivery purposes, the message says”, DIG Rohana said.

He said some persons have deposited the money, but no gift has been delivered.

He said majority of the complaints were from the Western province.

“People need to verify such messages before making a deposit”, he warned.

He called on the public to provide any information to the police if they receive such messages.

Police were carrying out investigations to determine the group responsible for the racket.
