Postal sector Trade unions have refused to call off the 48 hour token strike in protest over the sale of two key buildings owned by the Department.
Despite declaring the postal sector as an essential service through a special gazette notification the union vowed to go ahead with the 48 hour token strike until midnight today.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena told reporters that the services of employees could be terminated as it has been declared an essential service.
Post offices remained close for the second consecutive day severely causing inconvenience to the public.
The unions are protesting against against the government’s decision to sell the iconic postal offices in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy.
Notably, locals as well as tourists were seen protesting by holding placards in front of Nuwara Eliya post office yesterday (8).
