President Ranil Wickremesinghe has convened a special meeting of the government Parliamentary Group at 5.00pm today (28) at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting of the Parliamentary Group has been called as the government prepares to introduce its debt restructuring plan for approval. It is reported that the government is hoping to present the debt restructuring plan to Parliament at a special Parliamentary session to be held this weekend. A party leaders' meeting due to be held on Friday (30) will make a final decision on whether to hold a special session over the weekend. Meanwhile, many government MPs have also publicly expressed dissatisfaction over issues related to the 'Aswesuma' welfare scheme, which has drawn strong protests over the past few days. Many protests have been held over the matter in recent days by those claiming they have not been included in the scheme even though they qualify for it.
Some government MPs have stated that those who genuinely should be covered by the scheme have not been included in it while those who do not qualify have been added.
