Following a Presidential pardon issued by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa marking Poson Full Moon Poya day which falls today, at least 93 prisoners including 16 former cadres of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are to be released today, a senior official from Prisons Department said.
The 16 former LTTE cadres are currently detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for years. Among them, 15 of them are detained at Anuradhapura Prisons while one at Jaffna Prisons.
The rest of the 77 inmates had been jailed for minor offenses or unable to pay their fines. All the inmates who received the Presidential pardon are scheduled to be released today.
