The Supreme Court has determined that no provision of the Presidents' Entitlements (Repeal) Bill are inconsistent with the Constitution and therefore, the bill can be enacted with a simple majority in Parliament, Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne announced to the House this morning.
A three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena along with Justices Achala Wengappuli and Sampath B Abayakoon had made its determination after considering several fundamental rights petitions filed in the Supreme Court that challenged the constitutionality of the bill.
The bill seeks to do away with official residences and monthly allowances paid to former presidents or their widows.
It also seeks to do away with the monthly secretarial allowance and official transport and such other facilities provided to a former President or their widow.
