A jail guard was killed when a van crashed onto a wall in the Sigiriya area after colliding with an elephant in the early hours of today.
The guard with another colleague was returning from Batticaloa after transferring one of the prisoners from the Magazine Prisons to the Batticaloa prisons.
The van had collided with the elephant in the Digampathana area around 4.15 am. The victim was identified as Priyantha Kulatunga, 44. Another prison guard was injured in the incident while the driver escaped unhurt.
