Secretary to the Ministry of Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government J.J Ratnasiri told Timesonline that trade unionists have pointed out the retirement age of state employees should be 62 years.
He said the union representatives have discussed the matter with them in length.
However, during the budget speech delivered by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa it was said that the retirement age for state sector employees would be extended to 65 years.
Mr Ratnasiri said that the Ministry of Finance had the final say over the retirement age of public employees, and therefore was awaiting response from the ministry. Until then there would not be any change of the retirement age for public sector employees.
