Public officers contesting in the Local Government polls will be paid their basic salary as the conduct of the poll has been delayed, the Cabinet has decided.
Public officers who have given nominations for the Local Government polls, amounting to around 3000, obtain no-pay leave to contest for the elections. However, due to the postponement of elections, they have been inconvenienced financially.
The Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government, Dinesh Gunawardena had proposed paying a basic salary to them, and it was approved by the Cabinet yesterday (April 3).
