Sri Lanka Railway Locomotive Operating Engineers Union has decided to call off their strike on Wednesday (13) night following discussions with authorities.
The union assured that train services will return to normalcy from today as they have received a positive response for their demands. The 84 engine drivers went on strike from September 11 midnight causing chaos and inconveniences to train commuters with unexpected delays and cancellations.
Military personnel were deployed at train stations to avoid clashes between angry passengers and railway employees. Overcrowding of trains resulted in the death of an 18 year old and injuring another.
This led to the President declaring train service as essential services. The Railways Department warned all employees on strike to report to duty immediately.
