Rains predicted; May Day events set to be affected

Showers or thundershowers are expected to occur in various locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, today (May 1) after 2:00 p.m., according to the Department of Meteorology.

A few areas in the Mannar district and the North-Western province may experience afternoon or evening rains or thundershowers.

Parts of Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces as well as Galle and Matara districts will have misty mornings.

Therefore, the general public is advised to take preventative measures to ensure safety of themselves from damages within reach triggered by lightning activity.

In observance of International Labor Day, major political parties have planned many rallies and processions. Most of the major rallies are due to take place in Colombo today evening.

Accordingly, there are forty scheduled protests and rallies. Nineteen rallies will take place without parades.

Additionally, 21 processions and 19 commemorative activities are scheduled for today in commemoration of May Day.

Maligawatta PD Sirisena Stadium is the venue of the United National Party’s (UNP) May Rally. The May rally of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is scheduled to take place at Campbell Park Borella.

The May rally of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will start this afternoon in Chatham Street, Fort after a procession.

The National People’s Power (NPP) May Day Rally in Colombo will take place at Kannangara Mawatha,Colombo 7.

A special security program and traffic plan is in place to cover all areas where May rallies and demonstrations will take place.

Unless there is a requirement, the Police request the public to avoid the above locations and related roads during the protests and meetings and to use alternate routes.
