UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today called on the government to restore powers with the cabinet with a warning that the country was sliding towards a partial militarization.
Mr Wickremesinghe making his first speech after being sworn in as a MP to fill up the UNP national list slot said that the cabinet and parliament should be in control of administering the country.
He said, though he had no personal issues with the Army Commander he was opposed to the Army taking control of the COVID-19 control programmes and the Task Force appointed for this purpose was unsuccessful.
He said it is the cabinet and parliament should have the powers which have been given to them by the People.
Mr Wickremesinghe called for a debate on the issue.
Commenting on the economic situation, Mr Wickremesinghe said that the best solution was to start negotiating with the IMF and if they are reluctant, the government should be able to spell out their programme.
