The gold foil on the “Ran Viyana” of the Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Canopy over the Sacred Tooth Relic that covers over 3450 square feet, is currently flaking off and stands in need of rehabilitation.
The Diyawadna Nilame Pradep Nilanga Dela told the Sunday Times that he is seeking the advice of the Engineers of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Peradeniya (UOP) to inspect and give a report in this regard.
The “Ranviyana” was offered by former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, where a controversy arose as it is built over the oldest wattle and daub building known as “Vedihitistayana” or the place where the Sacred Tooth Relic resides and has also withstood the attack of the LTTE.
However, after sixteen years concerns were expressed on the necessity for the “Thin Gold Film” being replaced and Former President Mithripala Sirisena, gave an outright donation of 43 Million Rupees for this purpose which was unveiled by the President himself after its renovation.
The progress was entrusted on a contract signed between the District Secretary and the State Engineering Corporation.
Since the gold foil is coming off, the Diyawadna Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela calls the Faculty of Engineering of the UOP to examine and report as to what measures to be taken for restoration.
It has been reported that the Divisional Secretary and related officials had addressed the issue over the week and a decision would be reached in due course.
