Cabinet has approved a proposed amendment to the Constitution that a referendum would be required to extend the Presidential and Parliamentary term beyond five years.
A two thirds majority too would also be needed for an extension of the term.
Accordingly, the proposal to amend Article 83b of the constitution to substitute “exceeding 5 years” for “exceeding 6 years” has received approval from the Cabinet of Ministers.
The amendment is being presented In order to dispel any uncertainty and reconcile the terms of the President’s and Parliament’s terms as stated in Articles 30(2), 62(2), and 83(b) of the Constitution, according to the proposal presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Cabinet.
Meanwhile, it was decided during the party leaders’ meeting, that an adjournment debate will take place in Parliament tomorrow over the timeline for the presidential election.
