The Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga today said the failure to conduct Parliamentary sessions on Sunday was a waste of money as the government spends Rs. 10 million per day to conduct sessions.
Minister Ranatunga was commenting on the Sunday’s sessions which were postponed due to the lack of quorum.
He blamed the opposition for failing to go with the debate on the VAT on Sunday as the debate had been called by them.
Accordingly the money spent to arrange for the special parliamentary session on Sunday was described as a waste of money.
Only 20 members are required to maintain quorum in Parliament. Eleven government members were present in Parliament at the time when MP Nalin Bandara pointed out that it lacked quorum.
However, both the government and opposition have been blamed for the failure to maintain the quorum.
