The Supreme Court today rejected a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition, which was filed seeking an order deeming the government's decision to cap the interest rate of the Employees Pension Fund (EPF) at 9% in line with the Domestic Debt Optimisation (DDO) process violates the FRs of the fund's contributors without taking it up for hearing today.
The petition was filed by former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Wasantha Samarasinghe and five others challenging the government's decision of keeping interest of EPF funds at 9 per cent for 15 years as part of the local DDO process.
At least 46 respondents were named in the petition including Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Mahinda Siriwardana, and officials of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF).
