The Supreme Court today (28) fixed September 8 to hear petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP), allegedly without formal approval from the Constitutional Council.
The bench, comprising Justices Janak De Silva, Sobitha Rajakaruna, and Sampath K. B. Wijeratne, made the order during proceedings this morning.
The petitions, filed by several parties including Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and the Young Journalists’ Association, argue that Tennakoon’s appointment is unconstitutional. They claim the Constitutional Council did not grant majority approval for his nomination, making then-President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s appointment unconstitutional.
Petitioners are also seeking a ruling that the appointment violated their fundamental rights and should be declared null and void.
The Court has issued an interim order preventing Tennakoon from exercising the powers of the IGP until the petitions are fully heard.
