The Supreme Court has determined that several clauses in the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution presented by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) will have to be approved by a two-thirds Parliamentary majority as well as by the people at a referendum, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced in Parliament today (21).
The draft amendment had been presented by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara as a private member's bill. It was thereafter challenged at the SC by several petitioners by way of Fundamental Rights Petitions.
